Is this study day for you?
This interactive day is appropriate for anyone who is involved with the delivery or co-ordination at a practice level of NHS Health Checks. This study day will lay out the need and process of undertaking NHS Health Checks. From GP and Practice Managers through to the nursing team, Health Care Assistants and Health Trainers all play a very crucial role in the delivery of this agenda and the day is absolutely designed to include their educational needs.

This day has been run for years, originally commissioned by the Department of Health on the launch of NHS Health Checks and has consistently received brilliant feedback. Naturally the content morphs to ensure that we are bang up to date with the national requirements. We can tailor the course to include any local services or pathways to make the time as effective as possible.

What is it about?
We set the current national scene for NHS Health Checks fairly briskly and then go on to explain the whole underlying principle of cardiovascular disease and its development and prevention In a practical manner we proceed through each aspect of the data required to complete a health check and clarify the relevance. From date of birth, pulse all the way through to the blood results we lay each out with the what, why and how for health checks. Explanations to the individual receiving a health check is vital so descriptions are offered which are memorable and useful for the conversation which accompanies any health check. The concept of “risk” is tricky and so we have chance to step back and think about this and the messages we give to people.

As part of health checks we supply information about dementia so we explain this aspect to ensure we follow the guidelines and don’t get bogged down.  We utilise GPPAQ and AUDIT C which can be powerful tools for lifestyle change if understood and used effectively. We spend time on each so their potential is understood by delegates.

We do not major on lifestyle information as people generally are confident about the messages they need to give. It is the health checks process which they are most confused by.
